Governor ICYMI 32 of top 50 AI companies 2025-03-12 (web)

Citation

Office of Governor Gavin Newsom. “ICYMI: California is home to 32 of the top 50 AI companies.” Press release, Sacramento, March 12, 2025. https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/03/12/icymi-california-is-home-to-32-of-the-top-50-ai-companies/. Read 2026-10-20.

Bottom line

  • This release is the source of the “32 of 50” figure. It links the figure to the Forbes AI 50 list.
  • The Governor here calls California “the fifth largest economy in the world”. The Governor’s office changed this to fourth on April 23, 2025.
  • The release does not mention CalCompute.

Background

“ICYMI” means “in case you missed it”. The Office of Governor Gavin Newsom published this release six days before the draft working group report (Governor AI working group release 2025-03-18). That later release repeats the “32 of the 50” figure with no source.

Key claims

  • “The state is home to 32 of 50 top AI companies worldwide.” The words link to https://www.forbes.com/lists/ai50/.
  • Governor Newsom: “We are proud of the technology industry, which has helped our state dominate as the fifth largest economy in the world.”
  • “The state is home to 32 of the world’s 50 leading AI companies, high-impact research and education institutions, and a quarter of the technology’s patents and conference papers.”
  • “In 2023, Governor Newsom signed an executive order laying out California’s measured approach to state generative AI (GenAI) procurement.”
  • “In August, the state partnered with NVIDIA to launch a first-of-its-kind AI collaboration.”
  • “In September, Governor Newsom convened the world’s leading experts on GenAI to help California develop workable guardrails for deploying GenAI”.

Evidence and method

A government press release. It links the Forbes AI 50 list for the “32 of 50” figure. It gives no source for the “quarter of the technology’s patents and conference papers” figure. Other links go through a mailing-list tracker, so their targets do not show.

Limits

  • No CalCompute content.
  • The Forbes AI 50 is a list from a business magazine, not a government or peer-reviewed source. The release does not say which year’s list it uses.
  • No AI job-posting or venture capital (VC) figures.

⚠️ Contradiction: This release says “the fifth largest economy in the world” (March 12, 2025). The Governor’s release of April 23, 2025 says California “has officially overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy” (Governor California 4th largest economy 2025-04-23 (web)). The later release uses newer International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) data. Use fourth, with the date.

⚠️ Contradiction: This release says “32 of 50 top AI companies”. The Governor’s release of December 12, 2025 says “33 of the 50 top AI companies” (Governor TIME Person of the Year made in California 2025-12-12 (web)). The Governor AI working group release 2025-03-18 and the Newsom SB-53 signing release 2025-09-29 use 32. Each figure needs its list year.
