Governor California 4th largest economy 2025-04-23 (web)

Citation

Office of Governor Gavin Newsom. “California is now the 4th largest economy in the world.” Press release, Sacramento, April 23, 2025. https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/04/23/california-is-now-the-4th-largest-economy-in-the-world/. Read 2026-10-20.

Bottom line

  • From April 23, 2025, the Governor’s office calls California the world’s fourth-largest economy. It uses International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) data.
  • California’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) was “$4.1 trillion” for 2024. Japan’s was “$4.02 trillion”.
  • The release does not mention CalCompute or AI.

Background

Before this release, the Governor’s office called California the fifth-largest economy (Governor ICYMI 32 of top 50 AI companies 2025-03-12 (web)). This release corrects that figure. The Governor AI working group release 2025-03-18 is from the same period.

Key claims

  • “California has officially overtaken Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy, according to newly released data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).”
  • “According to the IMF’s 2024 World Economic Outlook data released yesterday, and BEA data California’s nominal GDP reached $4.1 trillion, surpassing Japan’s $4.02 trillion, and placing California behind only the United States, China, and Germany in global rankings.”
  • “California’s GDP figure is based on the latest state-level GDP data from the BEA.”
  • “In 2024, California’s growth rate of 6% outpaced the top three economies: U.S. (5.3%), China (2.6%) and Germany (2.9%).”
  • “average nominal GDP growth of 7.5% from 2021 to 2024.”
  • “Preliminary data indicates India is projected to surpass California by 2026.”
  • California is “the nation’s top state for new business starts, access to venture capital funding, and manufacturing, high-tech, and agriculture.”
  • California has “over 36,000 manufacturing firms employing over 1.1 million Californians.”

Evidence and method

A government press release. It names its data sources and links the IMF World Economic Outlook database and the BEA state GDP page. The rank compares a state’s BEA GDP with national IMF figures.

Limits

  • No CalCompute or AI content.
  • No AI job-posting or venture capital (VC) amounts. The VC claim is a rank only.
  • The rank depends on nominal GDP and exchange rates. The release gives no method beyond the two data sources.

⚠️ Contradiction: The Governor’s release of March 12, 2025 calls California “the fifth largest economy in the world” (Governor ICYMI 32 of top 50 AI companies 2025-03-12 (web)). This release says “fourth-largest”. The fourth rank uses newer IMF data. Use fourth, with the date and the data source.

⚠️ Contradiction: This release says “India is projected to surpass California by 2026.” The Governor’s release of October 5, 2026 says California “remains the world’s fourth largest economy” (Governor economy tops 4.5 trillion 2026-10-05 (web)). The later release gives no IMF data for the rank.
