University of California Office of the President
Bottom line
- The UC Office of the President (UCOP) and the UC Regents lead UC’s systemwide AI plan. It includes a “Sovereign AI Cloud”, described as UC-owned and UC-governed compute.
Why they matter
- UC is “inventorying existing compute across campuses and national laboratories” (UC Regents B4 Update on AI 2026-09-16, p. 7).
- The sizing and funding proposal is due no later than Oct. 2027, after the Report (UC Regents B4 Update on AI 2026-09-16, p. 7). UC has AWS credits of $14 million and a Google program of $32.7 million (p. 6).
- The UC AI Steering Committee has working groups on discovery, public good and AI literacy (UC Regents B4 Update on AI 2026-09-16, pp. 2, 4-5).
- The University of California is a registered supporter of SB 53 in the Assembly Privacy analyses of July and September 2025 (SB-53 Assembly Privacy analysis 2025-07-08; SB-53 Assembly Privacy analysis 2025-09-05).
