Kim Hazelwood

Member of the CalCompute Consortium.

  • Institution: Empire AI
  • Title: At-Large Board Member, Empire AI
  • Role: Sits on the board of a public AI computing consortium already running in another state, the governance and cost questions CalCompute faces in practice

Background

  • Empire AI named her an At-Large Board Member on Oct. 8, 2025. Its board then had 16 members, a size and mix set by New York law (Hazelwood Empire AI board appointment 2025-10-08).
  • Empire AI’s governance page lists her as “Tech Executive” (Hazelwood Empire AI governance).
  • Her career includes a tenured post at the University of Virginia and leadership roles at Google, Yahoo and Meta. She contributed to the Google TPU and the Facebook AI Research Supercluster (Hazelwood NC State ECE honor).
  • She holds a PhD in Computer Science from Harvard. She served on the Computing Research Association board from 2017 to 2025 (Hazelwood personal site).
  • Her papers include “Sustainable AI” (2022) and “Applied machine learning at Facebook: A datacenter infrastructure perspective” (2018) (Hazelwood personal site).

⚠️ Contradiction: the Empire AI release lists past roles at “Meta, Intel, and Yahoo Labs”. The NC State page lists “Google, Yahoo, and Meta” (Hazelwood Empire AI board appointment 2025-10-08; Hazelwood NC State ECE honor).
